More about asthma and airmax

What is asthma?
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lungs. A person who has asthma is very sensitive to certain stimuli, where others do not react to. Examples of certain stimuli are: pets, house dust mites, smoke and gases. During an asthma attack the muscles surrounding the airways become cramped. The airways become more narrow and breathing becomes difficult. During such an attack a person can in- and exhale up to 80% less air than in a normal situation. In The Netherlands more women than men suffer from this condition.

Types of asthma
There are different types of asthma, such as allergic asthma (one gets stuffy directly after inhaling certain allergens), intrinsic asthma (non-allergic stimuli are responsible for the symptoms, such as petrol, perfume, smoke and certain gases), exercise-induced asthma (one gets stuffy during an effort or if one moves too quickly) and severe asthma (most rare type, people suffering from severe asthma should have regular treatment in a hospital). When one has asthma this is often involves multiple types at the same time.

Heredity
One can develop asthma at any age, however one develops asthma most often as a child. Research shows that asthma is a hereditary disease. Heredity plays an important role in the development of asthma. Asthma itself is not hereditary but the predisposition to develop asthma is. If one of the parents is asthmatic or allergic, the child has 50% to develop the same condition. Do both parents suffer from asthma, then the child already has 70% chance to also develop asthma. If both parents do not suffer from asthma the child has only 5 to 10% chance to develop asthma himself/herself. Does one also suffer from allergies, there is also a increased chance of developing asthma.
